cBackup
When reviewing online backup solutions, you should take into consideration several things, including how easy is the system to use, how secure is it, can I access it when I need to, and can I get the support I need--when I need it.
Managing Your Backups
cBackup has a wide variety of options and features to help monitor and manage your backups:
- Automated Scheduling - select from a wide variety of parameters for scheduling when your backups should run. You decide how often and what time of day the backups will run.
- Backup Agent - Locally installed agent software performs backups in the background
- Runs as a background process with a low priority, so it causes little to no interference with end-user operations.
- Small footprint in both disk space and memory use.
- No requirement for opening holes in customer firewalls or other perimeter defenses in order to support operations.
- System tray “Scheduler Assistant” allows quick and easy control of the agent and scheduling service on the local PC from the desktop.
- Differential Backup – Once a file has been backed up, thereafter only changes in the file will be transmitted. This greatly reduces the time and bandwidth needed to backup your data.
- Email Notifications - Establish who and when email notifications are sent. Notifications can be sent for errors and backup activity. Notification can be set to be sent immediately, daily, or weekly – you decide.
- File and Directory Exclusions - Setup exclusion rules by directory name or file extension to exclude from the backup.
- File Backup Priority - Intelligent file backup ordering selects oldest, unbacked up files first, then files that have gone the furthest between backups next and finally just recently backed up files.
- Instant Backup – Quickly and easily backup a single file or directory instantly.
- Jobs – Jobs are used to define backup sets, directory scans or custom tasks. Each PC can have one or more jobs assigned.
- Select how often a job should run - daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.
- Performs job retries if a scheduled job fails or is interrupted.
- Mapped Drives – Backup & restore files on mapped drives. Computers running Linux or Mac can be backed up by mapping their shared drives onto the computer that is running cBackup.
- Multiple Computers – Easily manage the backups and restores of a single computer, multiple computers, mobile users or even multiple offices, all under one main account.
- Online Backup Management – Using a browser you can login and quickly setup what you would like to backup, review status, select archive restorations, and perform other management tasks.
- Open File Support – Uses Microsoft's VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) to allow backup of files currently in use by an application. This means you can backup Outlook and database files without having to shut them down.
- Version History - Setup how many revisions of the backup you would like the system to maintain.
- Select up to 10 prior revisions.
- An intelligent revision management system is used, where older revisions are kept in favor of newer files that have only minor modifications and the revisions selections are generally spread out through the entire life of the file and not simply the last changed instances.
Restoring Your Backups
Restoring one or more of your backup archives is probably one of the most important tasks--this is where the "rubber meets the road". cBackup gives you an array of options to select from to ensure you have all the flexibility you need to get back your data:
- Email Notifications - Notification via email as soon as the restoration of files is complete. No need to continually check.
- File Downloads – As an alternate method for access to stored archives, you can directly download to any system. This means you can get to any of your backed up files from home or on the road.
- Online Restore Management – Using a browser you can login and have full control of the restore process.
- Easily select all files or individual files within multiple directories.
- Search by file name, directory, file size, use wild card searching to quickly and easily select files.
- A tree view display allows you to quickly navigate to your backed up files.
- Overwrite Options – When restoring files you can select to not overwrite existing files, make a backup of the existing file before restoring, and not restore a file when the local file is the same or newer.
- Restore to a different PC or Directory – Easily restore a file, directory or complete backup to a different computer or directory.
- Destination Directory Type - Select to have the system restore the selected files all into one directory or recreate the original directory structure.
Security
Security is vitally important and Continuen will make sure that your data is always protected. We promise!
- Archive Integrity - Two checksum values are kept for each file, one before encryption and one after. These values are verified at every phase to ensure complete file integrity.
- Archive Security - All file archives are processed and stored in a manner that ensures complete security and confidentiality.
- File Encryption
- Files are encrypted before leaving the source PC
- Uses Symmetrical Private/Public key (AES/RCS) encryption
- Each archive file has it's own distinct encryption key
- Each archive file's encryption key is itself encrypted when stored in the database.
- Each Customer has a master encryption key which is itself stored encrypted. This is an emergency backup key that is not normally used.
- Archive files are “Double-Latched” onto the Archive Storage Repository - PC Client/Agent places archive into a temporary directory on the server and notifies server of it's presence. The server then moves the file to a secure storage location that cannot be directly accessed by the outside world. The same “Double-Latch” mechanism is used in the the reverse order for archive downloads or restores.
- All archives are stored in obfuscated filenames with no extension or other clue about the content or origin of the archive file.
- Archives can be segregated by agent, such that users can only access and control archives for their own, or specifically assigned PC's.
- Network Communications - Communication between the PC and our servers is completely secured.
- Uses Industry Standard SSH for secure, encrypted file transfers.
- Performs automatic error retry for communications problems.
- All communications between the PC and server (process control, commands, etc.) are encrypted.
- PC Agents use Private/Public Key certificates for authentication.
- Security Groups - User defined groups provide the ability to assign sets of rights to different users to disallow or limit access to specific capabilities and functions.
- User Login Accounts - Setup a virtually unlimited number of user accounts, each assigned with different access levels and rights.
More Features
- Automatic Update – Automatically checks for and installs any needed updates for the locally installed software. No manual interaction or rebooting needed.
- “Backup & Shutdown” feature – allows users to click on an icon to start a backup of the PC and then gracefully shut itself down. This is a great feature for laptop users that are always using their PC as well as for PC's that aren't kept turned on very long or are used infrequently.
- Dashboard - Quickly view your backup history and errors through a graphical dashboard. View how many files have been backed up, how many PC's are being backed up and the activity within the last 24 hours.
- Log Reports - Easily view job & error logs to quickly spot problems. Log reports can be e-mailed on an immediate, daily, or weekly basis.
- Full Help System - Context sensitive help on all screens. Plus, a "How -to" section to provide a step by step guide for accomplishing common tasks.
